Time just slipped on by......

Where does the time go? I have been trying to be good and post at least on a consistent basis and somehow I seemed to miss a few weeks. Lets see...the weather is getting warmer...yeah! My favorite time of year is summer. I love the sun, water and basically everything that goes along with the summer including the clothing, especially the flip flops. I can do without the bees, so if anyone has any natural bee repellent ideas please feel free to share.

On a business note, Mother's Day is coming soon....Corn Bags make great gifts. Even if you do not have any aches or pains, just to heat one up and lie down quietly with the warmth penetrating your skin while listening to soft music just relaxes your whole body...creating a very spa like experience. And don't forget all those grandmothers out there! I guarantee that they would love the chenille bags. I would bet that most grandmothers or great grandmothers had a chenille robe at one time or another and the chenille heat therapy bag will bring back those memories of days gone by.

Plastics update....I threw out all the plastic juice cups and now the kids drink from glass at home and when they go out we have the metal type canteens. I went to Walmart the other day and wanted to buy a brand name sugar free syrup and surprise, it was a #5 (very bad) so I looked at the less expensive Walmart brand ( I do not like to support Walmart because I think they destroy small town mom and pop stores...my own opinion...) with the same ingredients but the plastic was a 1. Had to buy the Walmart brand. I would have thought that the more expensive brand would use the better plastic, obviously not so...learned a lesson..always check.

INEXPENSIVE IDEA TO HELP RID HOME OF PLASTICS!

Sorry to be posting about plastics again, but found some helpful solutions for you all.

Found a great inexpensive way to help rid home of plastics. Lets start with spices. Since most spices are in plastics and many are in containers that are one of the "unsafe" numbers ( see prior post) , we purchased baby food jars at a discount store for .30 each (applesauce-so they will not go to waste) and they just need to be washed,labels removed and re-labeled and the spices transferred. These make great spice jars!

Now for storing food. Canning jars! I use the small ones for storing leftovers like potatoes, veggies, etc. and am planning on using those to send food to school from now on. Yes, the kids containers are the "unsafe" plastics so those have to go straight in the garbage. The large canning jars are great to store soups.

As I come across more inexpensive ideas I will share. If anyone has anything else to add, please feel free.

Oh..another "bad" plastic my daughter found today is a shocker..Vaseline...she uses it for chapped lips...no more!

Cancer Causing Plastics!

We get a homeopathic magazine and when we received it this month it had a very interesting article. It talked about how to tell which containers are safe and which ones are not. My 6 year old daughter took an interest (she really never liked toys) and decided to do a project for school. She went through our house and what she found could be a great expose' on a major news channel! Here's a small recap:

Containers with a 1 or 2 on the bottom are safest- she found: some plastic storage containers, Windex, Murphy's oil spray, salad dressing, several spice containers, face wash, cetaphil hand cream , juicy juice, great value apple cider vinegar.

Containers with a 4 or 5 on the bottom-generally safe but should be used sparingly and never be microwaved-smart balance, several McCormick spices, and several plastic storage containers (which I am sure are heated in the microwave all the time!)

Containers with a 3, 6, or 7 AVOID AT ALL COSTS! She found: GERBER JUICE CUP AND GERBER BOWL (Yes, you are reading this correctly), Kirkland olive oil, spice classic (many different assorted spices) and plastic cups sold at walmart used in the bathroom.

SO DOES THIS MAKE SENSE...LETS PUT THE CHEMICALS IN THE SAFEST PLASTICS AND THE KIDS PRODUCTS IN THE CANCER LEACHING PRODUCTS....SO SMART OUR SOCIETY!

Of course with my new knowledge, I am headed to the store and am going to replace all plastic containers with glass, even all the spices. Think about how long your spices sit in those plastics and the chemicals are just leaching slowly into the food! Even the olive oil has to be put in a glass jar after it is brought home. More work for me, but if it will keep us healthy it is worth it!

Am I Crazy?

I have been thinking about this for a while now, and today I finally took the plunge. I purchased a pair of Roller Blades. Mind you I just turned 40 and have not been skating for over 20 years. The last time I did go skating was with my best friend Cindy 20+ years ago. I lost balance and knocked her to the floor. She almost lost a tooth. Hopefully, this time around I will have better luck. I tried them on in the store and managed a few steps without knocking something over or falling to the floor making a total fool of myself. That is a good start. Wish me Luck!

Ambitious as Ever!

I have become very ambitious the year. Lots of new things are popping up at Corn Bag Critters. In the Pet Corner, I have added the kitty cozy and small dog, all you large dog owners...yours will be here in a week. Ella and Elton the Elephants are almost finished. I had to change the fabric as I was not happy with what was initially chosen. Look for them soon. I am also adding, but still working out the details; a large back heat therapy bag which gives you full back heat therapy. This size is also great to pop in the bed a few minutes before you crawl in so the sheets are warm. The shoulder/neck and the shoulder wrap heat therapy corn bags are doing very well, in fact so well that I had to add more of a fabric selection. Since chenille seems to be a favorite, I have added the 8" round in all colors. Last, but not least, I have added a grab bag. Since I am always adding new fabrics, I thought the perfect way to sell the discontinued fabrics is to have a clearance section. You pick the size and gender, we pick the fabric, you save a bundle!

I have started another blog as well; Recycled Fashion on A Dime. I am a huge fan of thrift and consignment stores. I love getting a deal and wanted to share my fabulous finds with everyone. Personally, I could not wait to leave 2009 behind, well... lets include the entire decade in that...what a mess it was. Hopefully this one is better...the year and the decade. I have made quite a few resolutions and this year I am going to stick to it...alas..that is why I am putting them in front of the world to see. Kind of hard to ignore when it is out there for millions to read! Oh..and they are in random order.

1. Make new friends! That one I really have to work on. I think the old ones are getting tired of me and my dysfunctional life! I did meet someone this past year that I wish was always a part of my life. She is really positive and a good person. She is surrounded by chaos, but never complains. I need to find more friends like her. I need to surround myself with positive and fun people! Goal number one!!!!

2. Stop whining! Thank you Dr. Laura! I realize no one wants to hear about any of my problems so I am just going to stop talking and focus on the positive things that I want to do in the future. I am also going to find friends that do the same!

3. Be thankful for the blessings that I have and not focus on what I do not have.

4. Walk more! Too many cookies, ice cream, chips..the list goes on and on. I cannot walk up a set of stairs without feeling like I have climbed Mount Everest. Since I just turned 40..that is a MUST goal. I am ordering the MBT tone up sneakers..suppose to tone your legs, thighs, and all those places that the cellulite seems to go to!

5. Expand my line...I have a some exciting ideas for Corn Bag Critters that I have to follow through with early on this year.

6. Volunteer. My daughter is at the right age to learn about compassion. I want to find something the two of us can do together to help others.

7. Go to church more. I have slacked off recently and I know that is something that I need in my life and is good for the children.

Christmas is almost here....

Well, hopefully most of us can take a deep breath, sit back and relax. The shopping is done, the cookies are made and the Christmas presents and cards have been sent. WHAT....who is living in this world..not me! I just finished ordering gifts online today, have baked since 6:00am this morning and Christmas cards..forget it, too late this year to even think about that. Every year I vow to be more organized with Christmas and have everything wrapped up by mid December, however that never seems to work. I usually end up wandering the mall on Dec. 23rd looking for last minute gifts. Well, maybe 2010. New decade, fresh start. Sounds good to me.

Snuggie....

OK. I am going to admit it, I love my snuggie. I would always laugh at the commercials and could not believe who on earth would wear such a thing. Well, I received one for a gift and I have to say I am in love! Last night I put on my snuggie and got cozy in bed and browsed through my celebrity gossip magazine (I know..but it is my only bad vice). Since it has arms, it is great when you are watching a movie and want to snack. I know watching movies, snacking and reading celebrity gossip..I have to get a more exciting life..maybe one day.

I hope everyone is finished with their Holiday shopping. I am almost..thank goodness. The only thing I did not start on is baking...that will come next week, however starting to put on a little holiday weight so will have to lock the cookies up after they are made..one thing I cannot resist is anything with chocolate.

Well, I finally figured out how to create a business page for my facebook account. Between the web site, twitter, facebook and linkedin it makes my head spin. I am not sure what I am going to do with the page, but now I have it, a small success!

I have talked about it before, how I have my weekly laugh therapy with LD on Curb Your Enthusiasm, however last night was way over the top. I am loving the fact that all the Seinfeld characters are showing up on the show, however some of last nights' content was way over the top even for Larry David. Not in good taste Larry!

Another one of my small, but embarrassing indulgences is In Touch Magazine. I know it is shallow, however I love to read celebrity gossip. Hey, if that is my only bad habit....not to shabby! Anyway, I have not received it in months...apparently an address mix up and I am in celebrity withdrawal. Hopefully the problem is fixed and it will be coming to my mailbox soon. I look forward to that quiet hour once a week that I do not have to think or worry about anything......but reading my celebrity gossip! Ahhh..the little things in life!

Have not started Christmas shopping yet, and it will probably be a year like all others...a few weeks before I will run around like a lunatic trying to get everything done. I am planning on purchasing some gifts online....I love the fact it takes a few minutes to order and shows up on my door step a few days later!

New Item!

I really have the creative juices flowing this week. I just finished designing a new item for the shoulders and neck. Now, as you all know I am not a fan of the heat therapy bags that wrap around and extend up the back of your neck and are very heavy. I think this hurts more than helps, especially if you have neck problems. I have been tinkering with this for quite some time and finally perfected it. This heat therapy bag is contoured perfectly to fit on the shoulder/lower neck area-not the upper. I am sure most of us are stressed or will be with the upcoming holidays so this is perfect. Just heat up the bag, sit back and feel the stress melt away! It is going to be available in my favorite super soft chenille fabrics and a few designer choices as well, however still working on those.

You may be all wondering why then do I also have a shoulder/neck buddy? Well, the 5x18 heat therapy bag is designed to be used on one side of the body. If you have pain on one side running up and down the neck and into the shoulder, than this is the one for you. You can contour it to fit the area you have the pain.

The more choices the better..right!

Sleeping with your corn bag....beware!

My kids have always went to bed with their corn bags, especially in the winter months when it is downright chilly. However, lately my son has been waking up in the wee hours of the night asking for his corn bag to be warmed. Now, I love my children, however getting up at 2:00 am to warm a corn bag is something else. Try to reason with a 4 year old in the middle of the night, it does not work. I held my own though, and did not warm it. Once you start something it will become a nightly ritual. I told him that the only way to get his corn bag warmed at 2:00am is 1) to be spitting up 2) to have the swine flu 3) to have a major injury. So now when he gets up we go over the list and of course the answer to all the above is NO..he goes back to bed. Hopefully, he will get over this and sleep through the night...I am getting weary!

I just got finished watching Curb Your Enthusiasm, Larry David really makes me laugh! Probably should have done something peaceful like reading or listening to music as I cannot sleep now and it is getting late.
Well enough about that, I just wanted to post quickly about the neck/shoulder buddy that I just designed. I really do not like the heat therapy bags that go from side to side hanging off the shoulders and pressed up against the back of the neck. I think it puts a lot of pressure on the back of your neck and spine and can do more damage than good. I designed this to fit in the curve of your neck reaching down to your shoulder. I have been told by many customers that this has really helped their rotater cuff injuries. Gearing up for the Holidays!

Well before we know it, Christmas will be here. I envy the people that start Jan. 1st and have presents bought and wrapped, cookies baked, decorations put out...all by November! I, of course, am a last minute person. I do start out good, buying one or two things early on, but somehow become wrapped up in life and gift shopping gets put on hold. I do love the holidays with the decorations and cookies, but can do without the weather. You can give me 90 degree weather and a beach any day!

We are starting to get in gear for the holiday season. We have many new designer patterns that are here or are coming in. I know last year we ran out of men's patterns early, so I have decided to expand that area a bit.

I know Ella and Elton the elephants were coming quite some time ago, but am having a designer moment and cannot decide on fabrics. Hopefully, they will get here before Xmas.

So when you are starting your holiday shopping, think of a corn bag critter. They are Eco-friendly, multi-functional and most important (especially in this economy) affordable!

I know once again it has been quite some time since I wrote my last update. Since my blog is business focused I will write about my business...but then maybe just a little bit on the personal side! I added some really nice chenille colors to my 9x12 rectangles and have also added chenille sinus bags. I also have a few super soft minky fabrics that I will be adding so check back in the next week or two.

Since I am really getting back into the reading mode I have another book on my list of good reads, Eat, Pray and Love by Elizabeth Gilbert. Just wonderful. After reading this book I want to travel to Italy, India and Bali as well. Ahhh just to take a year off from life to find yourself..what a luxury that must be! Again, I can dream!

Well am going to sign off to indulge in one of my guilty pleasures...watching "Curb Your Enthusiasm". A good way to end a night..laughing!

I have really been slacking off writing on my blog, as the last post was March 15th! Well, what is new. Ella and Elton the Elephants are coming soon. Just working on some final details. Very cute I would have to say! Also, should have the "milk buds" due here any day. I have some really pretty fabrics coming.

On a personal note, just waiting for the summer to begin. Found a really great author-Alice Lipman-and am really enjoying reading her books. They are very insightful and great summer reads. Am in the process of changing my hair color-I need to make some changes and this is a good one. I am slowly changing from blond to red. My children really want me to have the bright red/orange color, but that is too drastic for me. Ah..to be a kid again, no worries about self, hair color, clothing (well sometimes!). I am loving wearing flip flops and am enjoying the warmer weather. I really should be living near the beach. What a great life that would be! Somehow the ocean has a really calming effect. Ohhhh..I can dream!

Olive the bunny is finally here. She is an adorable lilac bunny with floppy polka dot ears. Olive makes a great addition to the Easter basket. If your children are like mine-one piece of chocolate makes them jump off the walls for hours-this is a useful, yet adorable gift. If bunnies are not your thing, check out Quackers the Duck. Any child would love seeing these cute critters in their basket Easter morning.

MICROWAVE IN THE BEDROOM???

Well since my last post was Nov. 6th, I figured it was time to add another. My mother is the biggest fan of my corn bags. She lives in Montana and everyone knows it can get downright bone chilling bitter at night there. She also sleeps with multiple corn bags for that exact reason! As most of us do, she gets up at least once during the night and then has trouble falling back to sleep. She decided that since they had an extra microwave in the workshop, she was going to bring it into the bedroom. When she gets up in the middle of the night she pops the corn bags into the microwave and several minutes later she is back in bed dosing off quickly with the warmth of the corn bags next to her. She swears they work better than a sleep aid! So, a microwave in the bedroom...not a bad idea! Corn bags as a sleep aid..possibly!

Easing the pain of Fibromyalgia

Recently, I gave my mother's friend a corn bag for her daughter who has suffered from Fibromyalgia for several years. Her feedback was that it really helps relieve her pains, and even requested a larger version! I cannot speak from experience as I do not suffer from Fibromyalgia, but for those of you that do...try a corn bag critter on your aches and pains. If you have a success story, please e-mail me. I thought I should give a write up to this great site! I am a little biased being that part of this fabulous duo is my mother. Montana Mountain Woodcrafters products are made in the USA (yeah!) from pine trees cut on their property. They are then milled and taken to the shop where all items are carefully assembled, painted and sanded to create a lightly distressed look. Natural and Earth Friendly Resolution

As I was sorting through my children's toys, I decided to see where they were made. To my surprise, I would say that 95% of the toys, (they have an abnormal amount, my uncle brings a carload every time he visits) are from China. This really is a concern , after all the press regarding China and the unsafe lead levels in toys. So I continued on in the house looking at things I never thought about: toothbrushes, nail polish, kid friendly plastic spoons and bowls, plastic freezer bags, shampoos, lotions, pens, pencils and the list goes on and on. Yes, there are some things that are still made in the USA, however most things are made in China. even some of the plastic freezer bags! Then I got to thinking, what kind of chemicals are my children ingesting from these plastics, nail polishes, pencils, etc. Yes, this sent me into a panic mode. I know I cannot stop my children from playing with all their beloved toys, but yes, I can control where the rest of the things in my household are from. I am going to make a conscious effort, even down to the freezer bags to make sure I am buying natural products that do not harm the environment and that will not harm my children. That is why I love my corn bag critters so much. They are natural, earth friendly, non-toxic and biodegradable...who can ask for more....oh and yes, made in the USA!

I have fond memories as a child of getting up Easter morning and running to look at my basket. Since my mother is a chocoholic, most of my chocolates were missing parts...sometimes an ear, sometimes a head.......none the less I loved my basket. I have just finished putting together baskets for my children...and yes, all chocolate parts are in tact, however my mom is visiting so my childrens baskets may end up as mine did....we will have to wait until morning for the verdict!!!!

Well first things first.....What is a corn bag critter you ask? Corn Bags are a “homeopathic” or natural alternative to the electric heating pad. They are filled with whole kernel deer corn, not popcorn. The actual corn bag is covered with the critter cover. You place them in the microwave for 1 minute and they retain heat for 1-2 hours or longer. Corn bags can be used to soothe and relieve earaches, toothaches, growing pains, general muscle/joint pains,cramps, backaches, shoulder/neck tension and basically any other ache and pain you can think of. As an added bonus, Corn Bag Critters are wonderful in bed to warm up those cold feet or snuggle up to on a cold winter night. As a side note...my both children are soooo in love with their corn bag critters that they sleep with them every night.
